Silenus

Antique sard intaglio of Silenus.

Foster father to Dionysus (Bacchus), Silenus was seen as the latter's tutor and companion.

A very fine gem, illustrated in Paoletti, Tomo VIII, casetto 6, #243. Described as 'modern', meaning the gem probably dates from the 17th or 18th centuries (?)

In worn gold mount circa 1820
